What's On

The Ballaghaderreen Arts Festival Year 2 takes place from the 3rd to the 11th of August in various venues around the town. Come see some of Irelands and indeed The World’s best entertainers.

Last year set the stage for excellence in performances, art and music, this year has a lot to live up to. Check out the schedule on the Home Page and below and we think you’ll agree that we have another winning lineup for The Ballaghaderreen arts festival 2024

7.30pm, at St Nathy’s College, Ballaghaderreen Players present Martin McDonagh’s `The Cripple of Inishmaan.’ One of McDonagh’s hilarious black comedies, it is set on the Aran Islands in the 1930s when a US film crew arrive to make a documentary. Tickets €16.50 (incl booking fee)

9.30pm Céilí Mór@the Castlemore, New St, with the 10-piece Pipers Cross Céilí Band – Ireland’s best, as awarded at the All-Ireland Fleadh in Mullingar last year.

4.30pm, at the Phoenix Centre, Art Workshop with Ballaghaderreen’s very own award-winning young painter, Conor O’Connell. Free, but limited numbers.

7.30pm, at St Nathy’s College. Julie Sharkey & The Ballaghaderreen Players present Martin McDonagh’s uproariously funny black comedy `The Cripple of Inishmaan.’ Tickets €16.50

3.00 pm, at the Phoenix Centre, Kid-friendly Puppet Show. Children free. Adults €11.50.

5.00 pm, at the Phoenix Centre, Art Workshop with leading painter Malachy Costello. Free, but limited numbers.

7.30pm, at St Nathy’s College, Christine Tobin, a highly successful jazz singer in London and New York, will perform – with Phil Robson - songs by Leonard Cohen, Carole King, and Yeats poems set to music as well as from her new album `Returning Weather.’
They will be followed by Film Night at St Nathy’s with Ireland’s former film censor and head of Ardmore studios, Ballaghaderreen man Sheamus Smith. Accompanied by film clips. This will be a fascinating look at life in one of Ireland's top theatrical  studios and an insight into life in film and censorship of the time in Ireland 

 Tickets (for both events) €16.50.

Art Workshop with Micheal Wann & Vivaldi at The Cathedral

3.00pm, at the Phoenix Centre, Art Workshop with eminent painter Michael Wann. Free, but limited numbers.

7.30 pm, Vivaldi at The Cathedral .Vivaldi’s Cello Concerto in D minor and Dvorak’s Silent Woods performed by celebrated cellist Ailbhe McDonagh accompanied by new Irish ensemble `Anamus’.
It will be followed by a World Premiere of Ailbhe McDonagh’s composition `Irish Four Seasons’, with its blend of traditional music and Vivaldi performed by Lynda O’Connor on violin.

The evening will conclude with Vivaldi’s `Four Seasons’ performed by an 11-piece orchestra conducted by the well-known David Brophy with soloists Alibhe McDonagh (cello) and Lynda O’Connor (violin). Tickets €26.50.

Parklife, Art ,Mary Coughlan & Lunasa

11.00 am, 1.00pm, and 3.00pm at the Community Garden, Park Life with vast local talent. Each open-air performance involves three short 15 -20-minute plays written and directed by Julie Sharkey. Tickets €11.50, with limited numbers.  *New dates announced for 4 more shows on Sat 10th & Sun 11th @11am and 1pm. Tickets online and @Toweys Grocery on Main St.

4.00pm, at the Phoenix Centre, Art Workshop with the popular and flamboyant painter Siobhán Cox Carlos. Free, but limited numbers.

7.30pm, Trad and Blues at the Cathedral with Ireland’s greatest blues singer Mary Coughlan beginning her 40th anniversary tour, followed by Lúnasa, described as `the hottest Irish acoustic band on the planet' (New York Times). Performing that night too will be sister and brother Breda and Seán Smyth, who have won over 40 titles for fiddle and tin whistle playing. Tickets €31.50.

Writing Workshop & Shakespeare . Saving Gaelic football with Jim Gavin. Happy Birthday Percy French

3.00pm, at `Stratford’, Kilcolman, Writing Workshop with Geraldine Finn. Free, but limited numbers.

7.00pm, at Edmondstown House, Shakespeare’s comedy `As You Like It’, with the London Pilgrim Players. Tickets €21.50.

7.30pm, at St Nathy's 'Saving Gaelic football' with Jim Gavin. Legendary Former '5 in a row' Dublin manager. Sean O Rourke will interview Jim in an event organised by the late John O Mahoy and his good friend Tommie Gorman.

This will be followed by Happy Birthday Percy French’, a tribute to the West of Ireland’s most popular song writer, with the Cathedral Choir and soloists.

12pm-3pm: Archival material can be viewed alongside limited edition photography postcards that are available to take on the day.

2pm-3pm: A conversational talk will take place with Nollaig, and those who attend are welcome to share memories and reflect on the communities who used the building. This conversation will draw from the connections people have between archive, land, industry and history while talking about the needs of a community and work with voluntary groups
